His 1943 paper, Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact, described 11 children with a unique set of symptoms, which he termed 'early infantile autism'. Kanner's work laid the foundation for modern autism research and treatment. He was a prominent figure in the development of child psychiatry in the United States, serving as the Chief of Child Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and co-founding The Children's Guild, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and families.
